The Santa Barbara Unified School District is the main public school district that serves Santa Barbara and Goleta, California. On January 12, 2011, the board of education unanimously approved a resolution to reorganize the Santa Barbara Elementary and Secondary School Districts into a single unified school district. The changeover began, July 1, 2011.〔"http://www.sbsdk12.org/news/2011/07/01namechange.shtml School district’s name change goes into effect>〕 Because the state provides a fiscal incentive for school district that unify, unification will result in $6 million of ongoing revenue the Santa Barbara Unified School District. ==History== In 2007, there was a dispute between the local teachers' union (Santa Barbara Teachers Association) and the school board over salary and benefits. The Association wants the district to give teachers a 6.5% pay raise and additional benefits to better complement the area's high (and growing) cost of living. The district asserts that it simply does not have the money to pay them.The dispute has been resolved, with the district giving teachers a 9% raise over three years.
